The architects of the sexual revolution won over the popular imagination because they knew the power of story. They drew together radical new ideologies, often complex and hard to grasp, and melded them into the simpler structure of narrative. Crucially, they cast narratives that appealed to the moral instincts of ordinary, decent people. This moral vision overwhelmed the church and silenced its faltering apologists. The author argues that if Christians still believe they have have good news in the sphere of sexual ethics, then two big tasks lie ahead. Our first priority is to work out what has gone so badly wrong, both in our understanding and application of what the Bible teaches and the way we have presented our case to the non-churched. And then we must offer a better story, one that fires the imagination with such force that people will say, 'I want that to be true.' This book offers a confident, biblically rooted moral vision which needs to be shared with prayer and courage.

In Romans 8:1, the apostle Paul made the remarkable statement that “there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” Unfortunately, many Christians have never learned how to live in this reality and have not experienced Jesus’s promise that the truth will set you free. This book is for anyone who has struggled with the debilitating effects of condemnation. For the Christian, condemnation stems from not knowing who we are in Christ. Each one of us has our own past experiences with people and events that have shaped how we see ourselves, others, and the world around us. As we begin to see ourselves through this lens of experience, we begin to accept the lie that these experiences define who we are. It is only by discovering the truth of who we are in Christ and living out of this truth that we find freedom. God wants to write a better story with your life than the one much of your experience tells you is possible. This book will walk you through a step-by-step process that will help you discover that story. If you apply the principles taught in this book, you too will be able to experience the freedom that Jesus promised.

All people who have ever lived, regardless of time, place, or culture, have looked for a larger story by which they can make sense of their lives. The search for this metanarrative takes many shapes and forms, with some turning to religion, others to politics, romance, achievement, and many other places. We all may turn different places in our efforts to find a larger story, but the search is a consistent and constant part of our humanity. The argument of the book of Genesis, and of the Bible as a whole, is that God is writing a larger narrative that will lead to the ongoing glory of his Son Jesus Christ, and in his grace, he has chosen to unite that glory to the good of his people so the story has room for us in it. Genesis is the beginning of this metanarrative of the Bible, and as such, its goal is to challenge the opposing stories we are prone to believe. The call to us is to join with Seth in "calling on the name of the Lord" (Genesis 4:26)-not just on the name of the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, but also on the name of the one that God prophesied would come to put the world back together (Genesis 3:16)-Jesus. Every event in Genesis derives its meaning from this goal and thus every event derives its meaning from him. Genesis is a challenge to us to find true meaning and purpose in losing our individual stories in the greater whole of the story of Jesus. In this way, the challenge of Genesis to us today is not unlike its original challenge to its original audience. As Moses led God's people into a promised land, they would find themselves surrounded by many competing narratives that would serve as arguments to them to find their identity in something other than God. Genesis served as the opening salvo of God to remind them that he and he alone was writing the story of the universe. Genesis begins a "better story" that will lead you to find the meaning and purpose that you are looking for in your life. This book is an effort to show that truth by using each story to get a greater glimpse into the story of God in Jesus and its implications for our lives.

In this groundbreaking work, Robert Sternberg opens the book of love and shows you how to discover your own story--and how to read your relationships in a whole new light. What draws us so strongly to some people and repels us from others? What makes some relationships work so smoothly and others burst into flames? Sternberg gives us new answers to these questions by showing that the kind of relationship we create depends on the kind of love stories we carry inside us. Drawing on extensive research and fascinating examples of real couples, Sternberg identifies 26 types of love story--including the fantasy story, the business story, the collector story, the horror story, and many others--each with its distinctive advantages and pitfalls, and many of which are clashingly incompatible. These are the largely unconscious preconceptions that guide our romantic choices, and it is only by becoming aware of the kind of story we have about love that we gain the freedom to create more fulfilling and lasting relationships. As long as we remain oblivious to the role our stories play, we are likely to repeat the same mistakes again and again. But the enlivening good news this book brings us is that though our stories drive us, we can revise them and learn to choose partners whose stories are more compatible with our own. Quizzes in each chapter help you to see which stories you identify with most strongly and which apply to your partner. Are you a traveler, a gardener, a teacher, or something else entirely? Love is a Story shows you how to find out.

In this book the author explores the shifting philosophical boundaries of modern medical knowledge and practice occasioned by the crisis of quality-of-care, especially in terms of the various humanistic adjustments to the biomedical model. To that end he examines the metaphysical, epistemological, and ethical boundaries of these medical models. He begins with their metaphysics, analyzing the metaphysical positions and presuppositions and ontological commitments upon which medical knowledge and practice is founded. Next, he considers the epistemological issues that face these medical models, particularly those driven by methodological procedures undertaken by epistemic agents to constitute medical knowledge and practice. Finally, he examines the axiological boundaries and the ethical implications of each model, especially in terms of the physician-patient relationship. In a concluding Epilogue, he discusses how the philosophical analysis of the humanization of modern medicine helps to address the crisis-of-care, as well as the question of “What is medicine?” The book’s unique features include a comprehensive coverage of the various topics in the philosophy of medicine that have emerged over the past several decades and a philosophical context for embedding bioethical discussions. The book’s target audiences include both undergraduate and graduate students, as well as healthcare professionals and professional philosophers. “This book is the 99th issue of the Series Philosophy and Medicine...and it can be considered a crown of thirty years of intensive and dynamic discussion in the field. We are completely convinced that after its publication, it can be finally said that undoubtedly the philosophy of medicine exists as a special field of inquiry.”
